The Hype-Less Guide To Online Income
Are you very familiar with those early morning hours…I don’t know, maybe between 3.00am and 5.30am? If you’re not I sincerely hope it stays that way for you and you keep getting all the peaceful sleep you need. However if you, like me, know these hours pretty well, or even intimately, you don’t know whether you are blessed (some of the time) – or cursed (most of the time).
Blessed - because suddenly - from nowhere your brain sparks into life and becomes a fertile hive of ideas and questions and solutions and positive thoughts – sleep becomes impossible but no matter, in your mind (it’s too early to get up and take action) you can plan everything you need to do.
Cursed - because you end up physically achieving nothing and 30
minutes before the alarm clock is due to bleep at you, you manage
to fall asleep and forget almost everything anyway!
I actually now get up and write down all the thoughts I have during these early hours bouts of insomnia and it becomes a most productive time for me. However, the pay back is I end up falling asleep during the day – and in front of a class of students this is not a wise thing to do!
I mention this because it makes me smile….(smile???)…it annoys the heck out of me! - when I read the hyped-up ads telling me I can earn a Rock Star’s income by working just 30 minutes a day on the Internet!...Yeah right!
Let me tell you right now – an Internet business…ANY Internet business takes HOURS a day, EVERY day – for months to even have a chance of earning ANYTHING let alone the stupid figures branded about in the ads - like money was confetti! An Internet business takes over your life (you end up thinking about it all the time) – it HAS to, to be successful.
Here is the impression of an Internet Entrepreneur that the Hype ads conjure up...
‘John Doe goes to the beach for the day then comes home, sits at his computer for 30 minutes before dinner and then wakes up the following morning and grabs his calculator to work out how many $1,000.00s he has made while he slept….’ You actually believe that!?
IF that actually happens... eventually – what about all the hours, days, months John Doe spent, beforehand, in front of his computer not understanding a thing he was reading about how to upload a web-root file or set up an auto-responder or whatever!?
What about all the junk he down-loaded, after paying his hard-earned money for what was promised, by outrageous hype, to be the next gate to untold and easy wealth?
What about all the frustrations of sending off e-mails to the 'gurus' asking questions and waiting patiently for days on end with no replies?
What about all the times his computer crashed or choked causing the loss of files and information?
What about the TOTAL overload of Business Opportunities and ways to earn a “fortune” he came across? – (Don’t tell me he wasn’t tempted by every new thing that came along and spent more time exploring all the alternate opportunities rather than focusing on one at a time!)
What about all the scams he had to endure and learn from?
What about all the sick-making hype he had to scan through?
What about the sleepless nights as I have described?
If you are already involved in an Online Business you will know exactly what I am talking about here – and if you are just starting out…PLEASE – if you take no notice of anything else I say at least – BEWARE of the HYPE!
How do you choose from all the millions of Hyped ‘Biz Ops’ out there…?
If you are anything like me when you first heard that there is masses of money to be made on the Internet you thought ok, let’s have some of it then! You perhaps ‘googled’ Home Business Opportunities – or Make Money – or ‘I want loads of Dosh’ (there are actually more than half-million entries for that phrase! – amazing!) – or whatever…And then you must have thought – oh heck! (or words that effect!!!)...
How Many????
So, how do you choose…?
I know, I’ll go for the ones that promise me lots of noughts for only a few minutes a day of work? Of course that’s what we want - so you/we send off our $47.00 here and $27.00 there and if you/we are particularly gullible even the occasional $97.00 here and there! And all we end up doing is making big money for other people (but that wasn’t the idea though was it?) and getting an electronic library full of books all telling us (in so many words) the same thing!
Yes, the Internet does have countless millions of people logging on every day wanting information, entertainment, news, products and – yes, home business opportunities! – but also there are millions of people all trying to sell the same stuff to these people. The competition is pretty intense for their dollars – or pounds or euros – or whatever! And of course people being people - they will try anything to gain your/my attention for the goods, information and services they are trying to sell.
And so as we surf and search for our ideal Home Business Opportunities we come across some of the most amazing HYPE (highly exaggerated advertising/claims) ever invented!
So a little bit more advice – don’t take too much notice of any ads you may see that claim -
“You will Explode your Income” (unless, of course, it’s from a pyrotechnics company!)
“Earn $100.000.00 in 4 months – risk free” (yeah right!)
“Create an Unstoppable Avalanche of Eager Buyers”….(eh? - Think about that one?)
Ok, - "Use my Marketing System exactly as I describe and with some time and effort on your part you can earn some money" may not sound as sexy as -
"My Marketing System will Launch your Earnings into Orbit"
but it is a much more realistic expectation.
The second headline is just meaningless hype (unless it’s from NASA inviting you to put your savings aboard the next space shuttle!)
And I HATE this Hype - don’t you?
The thing is, it is openly admitted, that copy writers are paid a fortune to write this drivel...why? - Because it gets sales...! What I can't understand is WHY does it get sales? Why DO people respond to this Hype...as they obviously do (otherwise it would not be written.)
I actually do know - these copy writers have studied human psychology and their sales letters are all about appealing to what we WANT to believe - NOT what we actually DO believe. Every marketer will tell you, you sell things that people want. Not what they need!
However this perceived notion has now been s t r e t c h e d almost to breaking point, especially on the information overloaded Internet - and is now actually beginning to cause consumers to become desensitized to the ridiculous similies, metaphors and.....well, plain 'silly' phrases, to grab attention and make a product sound far better and more desirable than it actually is!
"Suck in More Subscribers Than An Anteater On Steroids" (I mean...come on!?)
Another Marketers trick that really gets my goat – is the buy now or loose offer – if you don’t buy today you will have pay double because I will put the price up – (yeah sure!) Six months – or even years, in some cases, later – you hit the same website and guess what…yep! - the offer is still Exactly the same! Of course it is!!! Further you join a membership at an "insane" cut price because you 'took action TODAY' , before the offer closes....only to find out you are immediately offered an affiliate account!...explain that one to me...!? Is that not just plain deceit, even bordering onto fraudulent misrepresentation....? Whatever it is, it is not ethical marketing!
Another scam I have come across recently involves an outrageously hyped up e-book claiming to be the certain answer to millionairdom – or whatever! This book is priced at $47.00 – but if you sign-up to the sellers list you will get it for an ‘insane’ price of $9.97. Ok that’s not a bad price – lets’ go for that…so you pay and THEN and only then – after you have paid – you get the ‘Once Only Deal’ and find out that the book is merely an instruction manual (totally useless by itself) for a piece of software that will cost you $67.00!
My question is – Why not just be ethical and advertise the whole thing for $79.00 in the first place!? What is it about Marketing, that people think this is clever? You get a sale - great! - But - you also get a disgruntled ex customer, (who you can be assured will not be going round saying nice things about you!)
Another thing I need to mention here is - how do Internet Marketers come up with the values for their information products? My e-book is worth $97.00 but you can have it free!….eh? Do you know anybody in this World who would go into a regular bookstore and pay $97.00 for a book? I’ll tell you I don’t that’s for sure! And if the book is REALLY worth $97.00 do you think you would get it for nothing…?
They will tell you that you are paying for the idea - or the author’s knowledge, not the book …not bad money for that then eh? I will tell you how to become a millionaire…get some knowledge (from anywhere) call it a ‘secret’ and sell it with a massive dose of Hype! for just under 100 bucks a shot ...Heck, there you go read no further - there is your answer to getting wealthy...simple!
That, basically, is ALL you are paying for when you buy the latest E book (whatever it is called) about making money on the Internet - they all tell you the different ways to go about doing exactly what I have just told there.
Another trick, I guess, is to call yourself a Jerk and gain 'fame and fortune' by bragging about how wealthy you have become by 'conning' people (with hype) to buy your 'secrets'. I wonder just how many people have gone on to become millionaires themselves after simply buying these secrets...NOT SO MANY I'll guess! The 'Jerk' became a millionaire through a clever, albeit a puerile marketing strategy - you try the same and you really will be a jerk! for copying.
Ok, ok, the idea for this article is not to be totally negative or too cynical - I just wanted to give the consumers point of view for a change – so that, if you do become a ‘Marketer’ (and you will HAVE to if you have an Online Business) you will think about this side of the coin.
If I saw a marketing system for example that promised to 'EXPLODE' my income I would buy it expecting, of course, a MASSIVE increase in my earnings if I used the system. But what happens if the (good) system only increased my earnings by a moderate amount? – am I happy? No!… although normally I would be satisfied with any increase that made buying the system worthwhile – BUT because of hype I am now expecting much more and therefore I feel disappointment with the product - even, when actually I am still better off with it than I was before. Hype is actually TOTALLY counter productive. Doesn't ANYONE else recognise this?
I cannot believe I am the only person on the planet who would sooner be told facts rather than hype.
Am I the only person who thinks "oh, here we go again"… when somebody claims his or her product will 'TOTALLY CHANGE YOUR LIFE?' Hey, personally I would be happy enough hearing that the product could improve certain aspects of my life. Then, if even only one thing improved in my life, I would still feel happy with my purchase of the product. How can any product 'TOTALLY CHANGE YOUR LIFE?' – so why claim it? YOU have to Change your life using the product...surely???
Listen, what would you rather read in a sales letter –
"If you buy my e-book I will assure you that if you follow the exact process I describe certain things in your life will get better for you"
–or-
"I guarantee reading my e-book will TOTALLY CHANGE YOUR LIFE!" (….oh yeah!?)
Perhaps you may be more tempted to buy the book by the second headline – WANTING it to be true, but a claim like that is virtually impossible to deliver and will inevitably lead to disappointment and frustration - don't you agree?
Tell me if you think I am unique and am the only person on God’s Earth who hates being conned – of course I’m not and I ‘m surely not the only person to hate this hype. It really IS counter productive in the long run as we have seen. OK, it used to get a quick sale but now, surely, people are becoming increasingly skeptical when claims of;
"You can generate Bucketfuls of money in 5 minutes a day"
"Now you can have a Millionaire life-style like mine if you buy my Secret"
"Earn $20,000.00 in two weeks without effort"
"Join NOW and earn Tons of Cash"
and all that! and all that - always leads to disappointment, of course it does things do not (cannot) live up to expectations or be delivered, as promised in all the Hype. How much is a 'Ton' of cash...???!!!
Of course, there ARE thousands and thousands of good business opportunities available on the Internet – but I promise you this, you will not make any money in any of them without some effort on your part - regardless of what anybody tells you.
If you are looking to start an Online Home Business and you want the best piece of advice that I can give you…
Whatever you choose to do (even if it takes you lots of trail and error to finally decide) just STAY FOCUSED. - Persistence, honestly, is the ONLY attribute you need a lot of to be successful online (or in an offline business as well for that matter).
Making money on the Internet from scratch, as we have seen is NOT easy – Please do not believe anyone who tells you it is – BUT it is easier if you do one thing at a time – and do not hop about from one enticing and exciting program to the next – (like I did.) Yes, you may gain some useful experience doing this – but you will also quickly become very frustrated and end up pointlessly spending too much money and very nearly giving in (as I did).
Of course, I do really understand the Marketers requirement for Hype – a bit of exaggeration (BS) to gain your attention - but I ask, is there really anyone out there who actually likes it – and is there not a better way of selling?
ie - by giving simple truthful, honest facts! - Wouldn't THAT make a pleasant change? - No more "EXPLOSIONS" of your Income - just bit by bit increments to it. No more "EASY WEALTH" but reward certainly for honest endeavor.
A Dream (as illustrated in this page's header) but one I have - a Dream of Hype-less Marketing...?
So here is my question to you - would YOU rather do business with (buy products from - join memberships with - or be sponsored by)
a) Someone who has promised you the earth, or told you that your earnings will be 'sky-rocketed into orbit' or has told you that making money is 'as easy as spending 5 minutes at your computer every day' - OR -
b) Someone who has told you the TRUTH (whether it's what you WANT to know or not) someone who has NOT got you involved in any business transaction by deceitful or exaggerated claims (HYPE) ?
Of course there are many people and companies that are totally ethical in their business advertising and promotions and do not use HYPE and other dubious marketing tactics to part you from your money. - We do not see these companies very often when we are surfing in the Home Business Opportunities environment (unless we actively search for them) but they are there quietly building their businesses based on trust and respect. Maybe their CEOs have NOT become millionaires in 3 months (by resorting to HYPE) and maybe they do not feel the need to brag about or show-off their earnings to anyone who will listen in an effort to encourage sales, but they are growing steadily and surely and will be around for the long-term.
I understand the "Rich Jerk" is a very shrewd businessman - and by all accounts he actually is a nice guy - but his marketing - (although it has been incredibly successful for him) - for me, kind of sums up all that's bad and wrong with Internet selling...his marketing claims that he is a better person than me/you - because he is a millionaire and I'm/you're not! (of course we all go into business to make money - hopefully even lots of it) BUT if money is ALL he lives for, then I would claim I am actually better than him.
Fast cars, huge mansions, endless holidays, great as they seem - even those would eventually become boring if you had nothing else in your life.
OK I realise that I haven't actually given much more than a little common sense advice in this article - but I hope it points out some aspects to consider getting - or being - involved with an Online Home Business..
You can (WILL) make money online - (I am proof of that) if you take a common sense approach...
And I want to introduce you to a New Wave of Marketing called...
